When it comes to our spiritual growth, there are times when we feel like we’re spinning our wheels in the mud. This can be especially true following a period of major growth when we feel as if we’ve gained a lot of ground.
In fact, this is the natural trajectory of personal spiritual growth–periods of intense forward movement give way to periods of seeming stagnation. In those moments when we feel discouraged, it’s helpful to remember that we don’t ever go backward. It may be that we’re at a standstill because we’ve encountered a new challenge or a new layer to get through, but the hard work we’ve done to develop a higher level of consciousness cannot be undone.
Every step on the personal development path is meaningful, and even one that seems to take us backward is a forward step in the sense that it’s what we must do to move to the next level. In addition, an intense growth spurt requires that we rest for a time in order to fully integrate the new energies that have been liberated by our hard work. When we feel we’re not making meaningful progress, take a moment to rest and focus on your self-care practices. These practices are different for everyone, but they might involve some combination of mediation, journaling, grounding, and connecting with nature. Before you know it, you’ll be inspired and energized to work toward the next level of your development, and you will appreciate the restorative nature of your self-care routine.
Just as the sun always moves steadily forward in one direction, we never reverse our path once we’ve moved through something. It’s natural to feel stuck when we’re resting or revisiting a spiritual assignment that we have yet to fully process and integrate. But, in truth, we’re always taking the next important step forward on our amazing and transformative path.
